Overview
Work independently and with department and cross-functional colleagues to source and contract all packaging on a timely basis at the lowest total cost consistent with company requirements. Develop and implement strategic sourcing and risk management plans for all major packaging items. Interface across functions and with 3rd parties to gather information, resolve issues, support new product development and negotiate outcomes or prepare negotiation strategies for review / implementation. Support / lead process, analytical analysis, metric and systems development initiatives from ideation through implementation.
Duties and Responsibilities
Develop, present and execute approved strategic sourcing and risk management strategies for all major packaging items. Track packaging industry intelligence data and utilize appropriate techniques to mitigate market risk.
Directly manage, negotiate and contract for packaging materials and other purchased items as assigned.
Directly manage supplier sourcing, approval, and performance to optimize supplier relationships and total cost of ownership of packaging materials.
Support / facilitate supplier interfaces with R&D, Operations, Maintenance and Sales to provide ideas and support for new product development utilizing supplier resources as an extension of the enterprise
Develop, document and work cross-functionally to support / implement capability improvements including:
Lowest total cost contracting of packaging materials
Use of analytics in support of continuous improvement, supplier assessment and performance management, optimizing company competitive advantage
Sales, Inventory and Operations Planning
Cost driver analysis
Food Safety
Assist Buyer/Manager/Analyst in validating MRP requirements and resolving supplier performance issues related to purchase orders released against contracts when they have reached impasse with a supplier.
Develop and implement approved cost reduction / productivity improvement packaging projects.
Develop and submit standard material costs with supporting documentation annually.
Coordinate the timely reconciliation of invoice discrepancies with appropriate departments.
Some travel for the purpose of supplier approval, performance and relationship management and quality audit support.
Education
Bachelors Degree in packaging science, or related field plus five to seven years experience in purchasing packaging in the consumer goods, pharmaceutical or food industry. Professional Certifications: (APP, CPM) and/or Masters preferred.
