Research Recruiter/Interviewer

at University of Rochester in Rochester, NY   —   Feb 02, 2010   |
Overview
The Recruiter/Interviewer field staff position will play a key "front-line" role on the research project entitled "HIV Risk Behavior of Adult Minority Heterosexual Men in New York City." This project examines the sexual behaviors and determinants of HIV risk among HIV positive adult heterosexual Black and Hispanic men in an urban setting with high prevalence of HIV infection. The role of this position is to locate, recruit, enroll, and interview African American and Hispanic men living with HIV/AIDS who reside in the South Bronx and Central and East Harlem in New York City. Some of these men will be recruited through primary care clinics in these neighborhoods. However, because many of these men: (a) engage in illegal or stigmatized behavior (such as illicit drug use, drug selling, panhandling, theft, and male sex work), (b) have illegal status in the U.S., and/or (c) have co-morbid mental health conditions, they tend to be hidden from health services and must also be recruited directly form the streets of New York City. The primary role of the Recruiter/Interviewer will be to locate these men, recruit and enroll them into the study, and conduct interviews with tem. This position requires the use of sound independent judgment based on years of training and experience in isolated street situations in dealing with individuals with possible co-morbid conditions and behavior driven by multiple addictions. For reasons of safety, Recruiter/Interviewer typically operate on the streets in teams of two.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree with major course work in an appropriate health, social or technical field, with minimum 3 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of research methods and human subjects' protections policy. Experience working with vulnerable populations and with urban and drug using street culture. Fluent in English and Spanish. Competence with computer programs including Microsoft Word and computer-assisted self-interview software.
